The Black Mary Project is inspired by the legend of Mary Woolaston, a free Black woman said to have run a local healing well in the 17th Century.
Inspired by Mary’s story, the project asks the question: What would a 21st century healing well look like led by the global majority? As part of Camden Black History season,
The Black Mary project’s artist-in-residence Gaylene Gould invites you along to Calthorpe Community Gardens to share your stories around water, wisdom, ritual and healing through creative workshops and to contribute to a forthcoming exhibition at the Wellcome Collection and a festival at Calthorpe in June 2025. You can also learn more about Mary Woolaston and the forgotten local healing wells.
Part of Camden Council's Black History Season which runs from October - December, to celebrate the incredible and wonderful achievements and contributions of Black people across Camden and the UK.
The majority of the events listed in our programme are free, with a small number of events having a Pay What You Can with proceeds going to support the brilliant work of The Black Curriculum.
