Tavistock Square

Builder Thomas Cubitt developed the gardens in the 1820s on the estate of the Dukes of Bedford. The square’s name comes from the Marquess of Tavistock, a title given to the Dukes’ eldest sons.

Often called the Peace Garden, it is a leafy, shady and quiet space. Inside there are several memorial features including a tree planted for the victims of the Hiroshima bombing. There is also a conscientious objectors' memorial stone and a centrepiece statue of Mahatma Ghandi.

Less busy than nearby Russell Square, it is used for memorial events, company picnics and private functions.
