National treasure Barbara Windsor backs Camden to be London Borough of Culture
We're delighted to receive an endorsement today from national icon Barbara Windsor in her capacity as Patron of the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
As part of our bid to be London Borough of Culture we have teamed up with incredible local organisations that help give access to culture for young people. The Amy Winehouse Foundation was set up by her family following the death of the iconic local singer in 2011. It's aim is to support young people affected by drug and alcohol misuse or to help young people reach their full potential.
A central area of focus for the Amy Winehouse Foundation is to "support the personal development of disadvantaged young people through music." One of the ways they do this is by sharing Amy’s very own studio in London with a new generation of aspiring musicians and performers. Amy’s Yard is a 12-week programme designed to provide vulnerable young artists (aged 18-25) with the confidence and skills to become self-sustaining music artists while developing their transferable life skills, preparing them to seek and attain employment, education and training opportunities.
If Camden's bid to become London Borough of Culture is successful they will work with the Amy Winehouse Foundation on an Amy's Yard scheme for young people in the Camden and London area.
Barbara Windsor said:
"As Patron of the Amy Winehouse Foundation I know that music can have an incredible impact in transforming the lives of young people. I'm pleased that Camden is working with the Foundation through the 'Amy's Yard’ programme and I wish their bid to be 'Borough of Culture’, every success.”
