SPACE and Arlington formed a partnership in 2010 which provides twelve visual artists’ studios, plus a creative workshop programme for residents of Arlington and other homeless schemes in Camden.
Aside from the social and therapeutic benefits, what comes out of these workshops is artwork of a high quality and the opportunity for residents to progress onto further education and work in the arts.
Each year The Creative Space puts on an art exhibition showcasing the work they have produced in art, textiles, writing / magazine, music, photography, graphic novel and graffiti workshops.
The Creative Space at Arlington
The Creative Space is a year-round programme of creative workshops based in a spacious, dedicated art room. The residents are involved in choosing the programme’s content and use the studio for developing their own work as well as engaging with artist-led projects. Now in its 10th year, the programme has been developed by Arlington (managed by One Housing) and SPACE.
Creative Space Participants
Over 200 people have come to The Creative Space workshops from Arlington House and Camden Pathway hostels. Some continue after they have gone on to permanent accommodation. Current workshops include art and drawing, textiles/ screen printing and paper (where a paper wedding dress was made), photography, graphic novel and graffiti. The Music classes have recorded two albums and performed gigs, and there is a creative writing workshop where residents create a ‘magazine’. Participants have gone on to courses at the City Lit and Goldsmiths.
The workshop leaders 2019 are Federico Gallo (art), Isa Suarez (music) and Brian Baderman (creative writing and magazine), Crestina Velia Forchina (photography and cyanotype), Edmund Carvill (graffiti and graphic novel) and Silvia Sacrestano (fashion and textiles).
Any queries should be directed to the programme’s manager at ~Arlington Sarah de Winter - firstname.lastname@example.org
In connection with these workshops, there is an annual exhibition which showcases and publicises workshop output as well as pop-up events in unfamiliar spaces and involvement in other projects. This has included collaborations with the Wellcome Trust, the Whitechapel Gallery, Spitalfields Art Market, The One Festival of Homeless Art, Café Art, Camden Community Awards, the Jewish Museum, and other organisations.
