Across the Council’s own estate and operations, CO2 emissions have fallen by 59% since 2010 (this reduction excludes Council housing).
The Council’s progress on tackling the climate crisis is guided by the Camden Climate Action Plan 2020-25, which succeeded our previous environmental plan, Green Action for Change, 2010-2020.
In 2019, Camden declared a climate and ecological emergency and held the UK’s first Citizens’ Assembly on the Climate crisis.
Across its three sessions, the citizens’ assembly heard a range of evidence outlining the facts of the climate and ecological crisis and the ways in which it can be tackled, before developing and agreeing 17 actions that should be taken by residents, community groups, businesses and the council in Camden.

A critical analysis of the process and its outcomes was completed by UCL. The analysis explored what worked well and what could be improved for future participation and engagement activities.

The Camden Climate Action Plan 2020-2025 proposes a five-year programme of projects and activities around the themes of People, Buildings, Places and Organisations that deliver on the 17 Citizens' Assembly recommendations and bring to life the vision of a zero carbon Camden. This will be the first of two plans to 2030.

The Plan's vision is to achieve a net zero carbon Camden by 2030.
This will require everyone living and working in Camden to play their part, but the Council will need to enable and support people to take climate action. The Council will also need to lead by example by continuing to drive carbon dioxide reduction across its own estate and operations.

We launched the Camden Climate Investment as part of our work to take action with our communities on the climate crisis and create a more sustainable future for Camden. In June 2022 we reached our £1 million investment target. The investment will help invest to directly fund local climate projects. These include:
These projects are part of our Climate Action Plan, a five-year programme of projects and activities we’re working on with our communities to help reach our target of making Camden a zero-carbon borough.
