Camden Close - Up: Kat Pearson

Love Camden loves its local talent. We aim to celebrate everything cultural in the borough, from Hampstead to Kilburn, from the British Library to that little café around the corner - we are always out to show what Camden has to offer. As part of this we launched our Camden Close-Up series: interviews with artists, thinkers, entrepreneurs and downright interesting figures that live, work or are inspired by the borough.

This month we interviewed Kat Pearson, one of the most genuine and powerful Blues voices in London today. She hales from a family steeped in the tradition of Gospel hymns and Blues folklore. Currently working on a solo album which will be released Summer 2019.

Catch her at the Green Note Friday 1st November

1. What would you would do if you weren’t doing this? What would your parallel life look like?

If I were not behind the microphone singing, I’d be behind the mic presenting on the radio, I think “voices have faces”, you know when you recognize your favourite radio presenter just by hearing them? I have an image in my head of that person just by their voice.

2. What do you think is most important: luck, chance, opportunity or hard-graft?

I think…you need a bit of all of those elements. Hard-graft breeds opportunity to be in the right place for the chance of good luck to happen!

3. What has been your most career defining moment to date and why?

Signing to Columbia Records, it was such a great education. I had the experience to record, and write in highly equipped studios and rehearsal rooms, which was an enjoyable experience as an artist. Touring took me to many places in Europe, USA and Australia where I had the best seat in the house, on stage!

4. What makes your work important today?

Writing and recording the Blues! It is a genre of music that is so steeped in tradition and is the cradle of modern music styles like jazz, rhythm & blues, gospel, country and rock 'n' roll. My producer and I have just finished writing and recording an album that takes the listener on a trip cladded in stories and sentiments of Blues emotions, Jazz frills and Soulful heart beats.

5. What does Camden mean to you?

Home! I’ve lived South, West East and Central London, but nowhere feels as comfortable to me as Camden. Also, from where I live you can walk or cycle to some of the best parks in the capitol…Regents Park, Primrose Hills, Parliament Hills and Hampstead Heath.

6. What makes Camden Unique?

It’s feeling of home yet still a tourist destination. It’s a start-up business hub, has the diversity of urban life ie: folks living in council flats, within a stone’s throw regal homes. Camden is one of those unique places you settle into, and never leave!

Artist Bio:

Kat Pearson was born into the Blues and Gospel. Going back to her family’s migration as slaves in the cotton fields of Tennessee to Sharecropping in Oklahoma to Civil Rights riots in Los Angeles, she hales from a family steeped in the tradition of Gospel hymns and Blues folklore.

She was Born in East Long Beach, where she lived until the age of 7.

In that predominantly Black neighbourhood she remembers curiously looking at the symbolism on the walls of the Black Panther headquarters as the family passed by every Sunday morning on the way to church.

For her 18th birthday Kathleen’s parents took her and two younger brothers to London, here she found an even more culturally diverse community and returned year after year meeting a plethora of musicians and gigging in venues like the King’s Head, The Dublin Castle, Sunday afternoons at the Jazz Café and many more venues that are now defunct.

Kathleen founded Kat & Co…after a few auditions and some special synergy the band created a contemporary sound in Blues which gained rave reviews; however, the ears of the traditionalist still had a longing for that classic traditional delivery which Kat was raised on.

In late 2018 the “Kat Pearson” project was born to deliver that traditional side of the Blues, seen and sung from a female perspective
