Deep in the heart of Camden town there hides a secret. A local street not unlike one you would find in a small rural market town miles away from the big city. Tucked behind the countless shoe shops, bustling markets and camera-clicking tourists of the high street sits Parkway. Perfectly formed, self-contained and as a local high street, I challenge you to find a better one.

Need a rare model aeroplane or a sheepskin coat? A loaf of organic spelt bread, a ticket to an indie gig, Egyptian white tea or an antique Singer sewing machine? Then Parkway is your street. I moved to Camden about 5 years ago and much of the lure to the area was this hidden treasure. Not only can it boast being the address of the world famous Jazz Café but it also lays claim to more intimate venues such as the Dublin Castle and The Green Note, favoured in the past by artists such as Amy Winehouse, Blur and Supergrass.
 

Amongst the stars and unlike much of London it has also managed to hold onto a good number of independent shops, including Palmers et shop, Chapman’s sewing machine repairs and the Goodfare cafe which have mostly been in residence since before the 1950’s and passed down through generations.

There is also an abundant amount of restaurants to choose from too, including Italian, Spanish, Indian, Japanese, English, Vietnamese, Chinese, and an ice cream parlour specializing in frozen yogurt should you fancy a dessert!

It has it all, celebrities, independent shop’s, top gig venues, fantastic restaurant’s, we really are spoiled for choice.

The atmosphere is friendly and there is a strong sense of pride amongst both the residents and shopkeepers. Forget central heating, nothing is cosier than a seat in the window of the Goodfare restaurant on a cold February afternoon with a hot mug of tea and plate of their famous spaghetti vongole watching the word walk by on Parkway. 

London's lost it’s community spirit? Not on my high street …
