As large as life
This month the Foundling Museum opened their new exhibition Quentin Blake – As large as life
Gemma from the Foundling Museum told us more...
The exhibition of over sixty works by one of Britain’s best-loved and most successful illustrators, Quentin Blake, draws from four series' that were created for a children’s hospital, a maternity hospital, young people with eating disorders and older patients with mental health issues. The subject of each illustration allows visitors to reflect on artists’ continuing contribution to hospitals and child welfare, begun in the Foundling Hospital over 250 years ago.
Described as an exhibition which is ambitious, intrepid and joyful, visitors will discover senior circus characters juggling and tightrope walking; alien creatures from Planet Zog swapping doctor and patient roles with young people; young people engaging in activities that celebrate the quiet poetry and pleasures of everyday life and mothers and babies meeting for the first time underwater.
To coincide with the exhibition, the Foundling Museum has worked with Artfinder to develop a brand new free iPad app featuring a video interview with the artist and a selection of high-resolution images of works. Also available via the app and Foundling Museum shop is your chance to purchase two very special and exclusive limited edition prints signed by Quentin Blake!
A reading corner decorated with Blake’s recent designs for wallpapers accompanies the exhibition. You can also take part in family activities where you can create your own comic book or cockatoo mobile! And if this is still not enough you can purchase some Buzzwangle Badges, a Stupendous Stamper Set or a Squiffing Scrap Book from the Foundling Museum shop on your way out!
