La Soiree at Camden's Roundhouse
If you feel in the need of a bit of culture this festive season then head to Camden's Roundhouse for the spectacular that is La Soiree.
This weeks guest blogger is Brett Haylock, the original visionary behind the sensational La Soiree.
La Soirée is unique fusion of cabaret, burlesque, circus sideshow and contemporary vaudeville. A direct descendent of these traditional art forms La Soirée pays homage to these roots while still maintaining a vibrant, contemporary and modern feel. The show is gritty and beautiful, irreverent and fun, traditional and cutting edge but above all things brilliant entertainment and a cracking night out!
Camden and the Roundhouse is the perfect venue for us, the Roundhouse from its modest beginnings as a Victoria engine shed to a bold and exciting cultural entertainment venue fits in with La Soirée perfectly. The round shape helps us keep our warm and intimate feel. The buzz from surrounding Camden too is perfect quirky vibe and we fit in with the alternative, creative and funky landscape of Camden perfectly.
La Soiree is turning heads everywhere but if you're still unsure about the hype, check out our review from Love Camden team member, Mark Biddle.
Billed as a cocktail of cabaret, new burlesque, circus sideshow and contemporary variety, La Soiree has returned to the Roundhouse for the Christmas and New Year season. The show had a successful season at the Roundhouse in 2009, before moving last year to a run at the Southbank Big Top.
The show is a series of short acts, including acrobats, jugglers, opera singers, rollerskaters, and mime, all with a contemporary twist and a healthy dose of humour. It gets the right balance between making you laugh and making you squirm with discomfort: one slapstick act slips unsteadily across the stage on rollerskates while juggling a bunch of butcher knives.
If you are the kind of person that prefers to avoid the limelight then you might want to find a very obscure seat in the corner. The audience is an important part of this show, encouraged to join in with singing, clapping, whooping and hollering from beginning to end. Throughout the show audience members were plucked out to become an impromptu and sometimes wary accomplice in the act, with one girl in particular finding herself precariously balanced on the shoulders of a unicyclist.
The whole evening was relatively short and snappy and the performers have an infectious sense of fun to go with some impressive skills so it is definitely the kind of show leaving you wanting more."
