Love and romance since 1576

Hatton Garden has always been renowned for love and romance. Back in 1576, a handsome courtier Christopher Hatton asked Queen Elizabeth I to give him a house with grounds in Ely Place. The Bishop of Ely who owned the grounds did not have a say in the matter, and Elizabeth granted Hatton a lease, fixing his rent at £10 pa, 10 loads of hay - and - a rose at midsummer. This tradition is alive and well in 2011.
