Walking in Camden

Winter Wanders Walking Weekend

You’d be hard pressed to get something for nothing these days so when something worthwhile does come along it’s best to hop to it. Or in this case you could stride to it, many long strides to be quite precise because Walk London is now offering 50 different free walking tours around the capital this weekend.

An initiative funded by Transport for London to encourage people to walk more in the city, the walks range from historic walks to rural rambles. Conveniently, each walk varies in length to suit all abilities. And if you’ve ever needed an incentive to get to know the wonderful borough that is Camden better, there are several local walks to choose from. You’ll find just a handful of the walks on offer below.

Old Camden Town
Camden Town is a place of canals, cafes, cobblestones, Catacombs, craftsmen's studios, street cred, NW1 literati, Industrial Age iron and brick, leafy terraces and crescents, antiques, artists, actors, and art deco. And that's not to mention Camden Lock, London's busiest and brightest market - and its fourth largest tourist attraction, the centrepiece of the walk. Afterwards, if you like, you can take a traditional narrow boat to the Zoo or Little Venice.

Historic Bloomsbury
This walk through fashionable Bloomsbury covers the history and development of the heart of intellectual London, including the British Library and the homes of the Bloomsbury Group.

Mornington Crescent Meander
2pm, 29 January
An insightful experience of what was the old parish of St Pancras. The walk starts by admiring one of the best art deco buildings in London and progresses to a churchyard where the first woman to be ennobled is commemorated. Finally you will experience the splendours of the gothic magnificence of St Pancras station as well as having a sneak peep into the recently re opened Midland Hotel in front of it.

Longer walks
Fancy getting to know this city better? Why not choose one of the below walks which go through Camden. Grab your trainers, pack a picnic and head out at your own leisure.

Jubilee Walkway
This is the essential London walk. Expect a classic collection of the capital’s most iconic landmarks on the 15 mile journey. Designed to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, the original route connects all of the city’s most famous sights, from Buckingham Palace to the stately dome of St Paul’s.

Jubilee Greenway
The Jubilee Greenway Walk marks Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This 37 mile walking and cycling route is exactly 60 kilometres long - one kilometre for each year of Her Majesty's reign. It will link many of London’s impressive Olympic Games venues.
