Come for a relaxing, productive morning workshop. Just bring yourself, a pen and some paper and, in a supportive, stimulating atmosphere, create something completely new. We'll start with close readings of a couple of really short short stories. We'll hear what a few writers from Elizabeth Bowen to Elmore Leonard have to say about how to write and how to plot. And we'll engage in fun, inspiring group exercises which will also explore the links between camaraderie and creativity.

After the workshop, Josie Barnard will read from her recent creative non-fiction 'The Book of Friendship' and discuss how camaraderie and creativity entwined for writers such as CS Lewis and Tolkein, Elizabeth Bishop and Marianne Moore and Dickens and Wilkie Collins.

With Catherine Howell (V&A Museum of Childhood)

Some of the most familiar board games in the world are games about war: Risk, Battleships… even chess. But what about games that were made and played in the shadow of war? Games like the notorious ‘Jews Out!’ game, for example, which reinforced the aggressive antisemitic message of Nazi propaganda?

This interactive workshop, hosted by the Wiener Library with Catherine Howell of the Victoria and Albert Museum of Childhood, will explore the meaning of game-playing and childhood in the context of global conflict.

Admission is free of charge, but places must be reserved in advance by emailing info@wienerlibrary.co.uk or calling 020 7636 7247.

To mark Refugee Week, the Wiener Library is pleased to be screening a remarkable film examining the experiences of twenty-five men and women who came to Britain as refugees from Austria.

'Double Exposure' draws on the unique interviews of the Association of Jewish Refugees’ Refugee Voices Audio-Visual History Archive, housed at the Wiener Library. The film explores the double nature of the relationship between the culture originally inhabited by refugees, and their adopted culture.

The screening will be followed by a Q and A session with some of the interviewees, the director of the film Dr Bea Lewkowicz, and Dr Anthony Grenville, author of ‘Jewish Refugees from Germany and Austria in Britain’ (2009).

A unique exhibition of contemporary art will be on show alongside the collection of ancient artefacts at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology in May. The show will feature the work of 12 artists from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

The exhibition is the result of a recent collaboration between the Petrie Museum and the University of the Arts London, which gave second-year BA Fine Art students from Central Saint Martins an opportunity to study the museum’s extensive archaeological collection. The students were asked to contemplate the ways in which civilisation has been portrayed through the museum, and how the object has been reconsidered under and after modernism. Their resulting works reflect their own personal take on the museum’s objects and the theme of historic representation.
