The Olympic and Paralympic flame lit up Camden this summer
(for information on the paralympic torch relay see below)
Camden welcomed the Olympic flame this summer as part of its amazing journey across the country. Thousands of people set their alarms early to line the streets, not wanting to miss this once in a lifetime chance to see the Olympic flame as it is carried through Camden.
Camden's stretch of the torch relay took place on Thursday 26 July 2012. We celebrated the start of the torch relay in Camden with a launch event at the Roundhouse, and then held four main events across the borough on the day - from a community breakfast to performances from some of Camden' s well known artists and stars of the future.
You can still download our torch relay route map if you want a souvenir to keep!
The next day, Friday 27 July, the torch relay made its way to the Olympic Stadium for the lighting of the cauldron at the opening ceremony.
Camden's torch relay launch
We celebrated the start of the torch relay in Camden with a launch event at the Roundhouse. A mass choir joined the Roundhouse choir and sang beautifully as the first torchbearer started the journey through Camden.
Community breakfast
The torchbearer passed through St Pancras Gardens, where crowds also enjoyed a community breakfast. There were also craft workshops and entertainment from dance and music performances to a tai chi demonstration.
Camden's stars of the future
Some of Camden's young emerging artists performed at a musical celebration in Granary Square, as the torch passed by. Performances from Camden Youth Choir, David Craise and band and a water based performance spectacular from Akademi were enjoyed by the crowds.
Camden's best loved acts at St Pancras station
A musical extravaganza rounded off the morning's celebrations in St Pancras International. Professional performers included The Damon Brown Jazz Band, The Exhibitionists and Dance United, plus a presentation from Greenwood Dance Troupe. There was also an extra special treat from Jazzi B Soul II Soul.
