Camden is internationally known as the centre of alternative fashion in London. The goths, punks, mods and hippies that used to congregate on the streets and around the lock have given the area its edge.
Since then the area has become a little more gentrified, albeit with the goths and punks still very much present – and Camden has grown a fantastic reputation for shopping with a vast array of fashions, from funky Doc Martens in Camden Town to fashionable Hunter wellies in Hampstead.
fashion
Fashion in Camden Town is still somewhat alternative with a preference for good quality second-hand shops both in and around the markets.
In the markets themselves you can find low cost high-street fashion-wear for a fraction of high-street costs. Punters can expect to pick up a vintage fur coat just as easily as a cute little playsuit. Clubbers and night-owls can find some amazing outfits at the uber trendy Cyberdog shop and you can feel the same fashion vibe in the air which inspired legendary British designer, Wayne Hemingway of Red or Dead fame, who first started right here selling from one our classic Camden market stalls.
Over in Hampstead, shopaholics beware – it is virtually impossible not to be tempted by the beautiful beautiful boutiques, gorgeous gift shops and high street favourites. Take time to explore the pretty alleyways where you’ll discover a trove of delightful original stores.
market treasures
Camden’s vibrant market culture adds to the mix of shopping in the borough, with markets dotted everywhere from north to south selling good quality fresh produce, bric a brac and gifts as well as clothes.
Camden Lock markets and Stables markets are a must-do if you looking to buy some creative and unique gifts and are famous worldwide.
In the south of Camden, the beautiful Brunswick Centre mixes fashion and good food in a setting reminiscent of the Mediterranean (well on a sunny day).
booklovers
Excellent independent bookshops also abound in the borough with several having made a cult name for themselves such as Daunt Books, Primrose Hill Books and Gay’s the Word.
Second-hand bookshops are plentiful on Marchmont Street and Flask Walk, while antique book lovers will delight in mooching around Great Russell Street in particular.
